I lead three discussion sections each Friday for Mark Deuze’s T101 class on Media Life. This weeks topic was UGC and instead of asking questions and staring at blank, tired faces I challenged the students. I brought along my flip video camera and asked them to make a video during the discussion section that did two things:

• Defined UGC
• Gave examples of UGC

After covering some quick administrivia, I explained the concept and sat back. They students looked around bewildered but soon began to toss out ideas and concepts began to form.
Once they began their videos I added a second part to the challenge. They had one week to promote their videos using their social networks. In essence, make their own videos go viral.
